The Perfect Start

The Eagles beat the Memorial Mustangs on Thursday night at Pridgeon Stadium to add another digit to the win column. The Eagles put up 55 points against Northbrook, in their previous game, and on Thursday they put up 45 points totaling 100 points in the last two games.

The Eagles’ defense got things rolling with an interception by Mekhi Davis (12) who returned it to their end zone. The pick six put the Eagles up on the board first, with seven minutes to go in the first quarter.

Six minutes later, the Mustangs scored to tie the game back up at seven points a piece. The Eagles drove down the field to start the second quarter. Running back Koby Leavatts (12) got the handoff and ran ten yards all the way to the house, making it 14-7, and that wasn’t the last time from the Eagles’ running back.

With nine minutes to go in the first half, the Eagles drew up a trick play. Quarterback TJ Goodwin (12) passed to wide receiver Semaj Trahan (12) who then launched it down field to his receiver, Koby Leavatts, for a 63-yard touchdown.

Leavatts would score two more touchdowns on three and four yard rushes before the halftime break. The score at halftime was 35-7 with the Eagles sitting on a comfortable lead.

The Eagles’ defense allowed zero points to the Mustangs’ offense for the remainder of the game. The third quarter was a quiet quarter until Leavatts scored for a final time with 26 seconds left. In the fourth quarter, the Eagles capped off the game with a field goal. The final score was 45-7 with the Eagles earning their fifth win of the season.

Head Coach Christopher Brister is very happy with his team’s start to the season, but he says that the Eagles are never satisfied and that they are always striving to be better.

“We have some great teams left on our schedule, so we have to continue to play well,” Coach Brister said following Thursday’s victory. “I have been happy with our effort level and preparation to this point.  However, to win in our District, you have to be consistent. I would say we need to improve in that area.”

The Eagles will play the only other undefeated team in the division, Cy-Fair, on Thursday, October 4, at Pridgeon Stadium at 7 p.m.

“[Cy-Fair is] the defending state champions and have dominated everyone they’ve played this year,” Coach Brister said.  “For us, it’s about getting better in all phases of the game. It will take our best effort to beat Cy-Fair, and we are excited for the opportunity.”
