When I left this play I had to look back and make sure that it hadn’t been in a dream. The Cy Falls theatre program tackled “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” by William Shakespeare. They did a wonderful job at delivering this comedic story about  a confusing series of romances.

In the play, Theseus, the duke of Athens, is getting ready to marry Hippolyta, the queen of the Amazons. Egeus, the father of Hermia who is played as a woman in this version (Egea, mother of Hermia), comes into Theseus’ court with Hermia, Lysander and Demetrius. Egea wants Hermia to marry Demetrius, who loves Hermia, but Hermia being in love with Lysander, refuses. Egea asks for justice and Theseus tells Hermia that she has until the wedding to consider her choices. If she disobeys, she could be sent to a convent or even killed. Hermia and Lysander decide to run away together. Oberon, king of the fairies, tells Puck, who his his right hand man, to obtain a flower that when spread over someone’s eyelids, or in the case of this play, inhaled, can make someone fall in love with the first person they see. Everyone starts to fall in love with the wrong person.

The set of the play was beautifully put together with an arch of ribbon that made you feel like you were right in the middle of an enchanted wood. The lighting was great, constantly changing to help pull off the mood.

Nico Castillo (11), playing Nick Bottom, gave an outstanding performance. He projected his voice well and it was easy to understand. Not to mention the comedy he added to the play.

Some of the play was a little harder to understand. The actors just weren’t quite loud enough, and because it’s a Shakespeare play and incorporates a lot of old English, we really needed slightly better vocal projection.

Another outstanding performance was given by Cameron Pierson (12), playing Demetrius. He did a great job in his role, especially acting with Helena, played by Erynne Wis (11), who was also very exciting to watch.

A midsummer Night’s Dream was a great play played by a great cast. It was funny and entertaining. I found myself wanting to watch more and see how everything would turn out. The Cy Falls theatre program deserves a round of applause.
