The beginning of every February commences the start of Black History Month. It is an annual tradition that many look forward to, and appreciate. It is important because it sets aside one month to highlight Black history meaning, getting to know black creators, artists, activists, and innovators.

Black History Month began in the 20th century after it became larger than what was Negro History Week. It started to get recognized nationally, then globally.

Black History Month can be a learning opportunity for everyone. It is a time of year that not only gives the younger generation, but even millennials and the older generation a chance to learn about and understand African Americans, what they went through, and accomplished in the past. It is vital to know about this because of how much this group of people have done for the advancement of the United States. Not taking the time to understand black people’s pasts is ignoring a big part of the U.S.’ foundation and how this country is where it is today.

This month is also important because it can be a month of praise and celebration of the present. Like, praising Maame Biney for being the first black woman to make the U.S. Olympic speedskating team, or Ryan Coogler for the direction of Black Panther (2018), and artists like Chloe x Halle for being nominated for their first Grammy award.

February is a time of celebration and remembrance for the history of African American people. It is important to recognize black history in the way the history of other races are highlighted, too. It gives black people a sense of pride every year to be able to commemorate their ancestors, past heroes, and themselves.
