Eagles Win Again Under The Thursday Night Lights

The Eagles took on the Cypress Creek Cougars at Pridgeon Stadium on Thursday night and came away with their third victory in just as many games.

Cy Falls won the coin toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff. As the sun set to the west and the temperatures lingered at 90 degrees, Eagles return man Jaylan Walker (11) returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown, just 12 seconds into the game.

On the Cougars’ first and second drive of the game, they were held to fourth down as the Eagles’ pass rush forced multiple incompletions with the addition of a sack by Dontrell Kelley (12).

On the Cougars third drive, they gained 43 yards but were held to only a field goal by the Eagle defense. Cougar kicker Diego Gracia (12) was split the uprights on a 17-yard field goal. After a few more punts, the first quarter wrapped up with a score of 7-3 with the Eagles on top.

On the first drive of the Cougars’ second quarter, quarterback Julian Uwadia (12) moved the ball down field on a big throw but was stopped on third down a few plays later and the Cougars couldn’t convert the fourth down conversion. Eagles’ linebacker Zion Wilhite (12) added a sack to his stat sheet on that drive.

On the Cougars’ final drive of the first half, they ate up a lot of clock and marched down field. With two seconds left before halftime, they attempted a 21-yard field goal that was blocked by the Eagles ending the first half. The score at halftime remained 7-3.

At 8:37 p.m., the second half kickoff was underway, but instead of the Cougars getting the ball to start the half, the Eagles tried the onside kick and it paid off. The Eagles recovered the kick at the Cougars’ 29 yard line.

Just a few plays later, the Eagles’ quarterback Brandon Collins (12) completed a 15-yard pass to receiver Ricky Johnson (12) for the second touchdown of the night with 9:31 left in the third quarter.

The running game had a great night rushing and the first touchdown came near the end of the third quarter when running back JP Martin (11) ran the ball in 4 yards to add to the lead.

With just over 10 minutes left in the game, the Cougars responded with a 93-yard touchdown to trim the Eagles’ lead to 12. The Cougars attempted the two-point conversion, but it was quickly stopped by the Eagles’ secondary.

The Eagles’ RB JP Martin (11) broke through tough goal line defense with five minutes left in the game for his second touchdown on the night.

A pass from Uwadia (12) to Legend Grigsby (12) was good for a 12-yard touchdown and the Cougars would tack on the final points via a two-point conversion, bringing the final score to 28-17.

The Eagles will take on the Northbrook Raiders for their next game on Thursday, September 19, at 7:00 p.m. at Pridgeon Stadium.
