Globally, the number of coronavirus cases surpasses half a million. As the number of cases in China continuously drops, the number of cases in the U.S. rise; leading the U.S. to become the country with the most cases in the world. New York City doctors report that the number of patients on ventilators have doubled within the past three days. Earlier in the day, New York City’s mayor, Bill De Blasio, reported that the city will increase the number of ventilators by 2,500. However, later in the day, U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Jerome Adams, argues against stockpiling medical equipment.

“We will not supply our way out of this problem,” Adams said. “A lot of the capacity that folks are looking for is already out there. It’s sitting on shelves in surgery centers. It’s sitting in hospitals. It’s just misaligned.”

In Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott has issued an edit, stressing that those who have traveled near or in New York City or New Orleans to self-quarantine for a minimum of 14 days.

President Trump signs and passes a two trillion dollar coronavirus relief package. The bill is meant to protect businesses and individuals in the event of the unpredicted economic downfall due to mass quarantines taking place all over the U.S. 

“No economic policy can fully end the hardship so long as the public health requires that we put so much of our commerce on ice,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. said. “This isn’t even a stimulus package. It is emergency relief. Emergency relief. That’s what this is.”

As China begins to witness a substantially lower number of cases, they begin to strengthen their travel bans by banning most foreign nationals, including those who have a Chinese visa or residency permits. 

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau increases travel bans within the country. Now, those who show any signs of the virus will not be allowed on domestic flights and intercity trains. 

In the U.S., the first infant to die of causes related to the coronavirus has been reported in New York City. Cities continue to increase the number of coronavirus tests they run per day; however, the number is extremely limited.

Tensions between states increase as New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo claims he will sue Rhode Island if they do not stop refusing to let cars with New York license plates enter the state.

Globally, there are over 700,000 reported cases of the virus. In the U.S., the number increases to 135,856 reported cases with 2,391 deaths (as of EST 5:30 P.M.); CNN reports that the number of reported cases doubles every three days.

 Trump and the CDC have both advised residents in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut to avoid all non essential travel for two weeks as professionals and critics continue to argue whether or not New York is the new epicenter for the virus and therefore have stricter bans. 

About one third of Americans, over 210 million people, are currently being asked to self-quarantine within their homes; especially those in New York, where almost half of the U.S. cases are reported. 

The White House’s Coronavirus task force estimates that there could be anywhere from 100,000 to 200,000 American deaths because of the virus. This comes as a significant decrease from the one to two million deaths some were predicting. However, even with this prediction, Dr. Anthony Fauci, member of the task force, strongly recommends Americans to ignore estimates.
